FFXIV Modding Guide

If this is your first time modding FFXIV then rest assured that the process is simple. A general word of warning: It is recommended that you do not talk publicly about the use of plugins. Do not use plugins to harass or negatively impact the experience of other players. By using plugins, you are accepting the risks associated, such as an in-game ban.

In order to mod your FFXIV game (client) properly you need several items in order,

  1. XIVLauncher
  2. Penumbra
  3. Misc Plugins

XIVLauncher game launcher

XIVLauncher is an alternative launcher for FFXIV that provides a more intuitive UI and support for various add-ons and enhancements to the game. These enhancements range from plug-ins that offer UI enhancements and visual changes as well as tweaking gameplay. If you’ve ever thought, “I wonder if there was a plugin for…”, it can probably be found and used through the XIVLauncher.

A general word of warning: It is recommended that you do not talk publicly about the use of plugins. Do not use plugins to harass or negatively impact the experience of other players. By using plugins, you are accepting the risks associated, such as an in-game ban.

Why use XIVLauncher?

− Auto-login
− Fast patching
− Discord Rich Presence
− Fast in-game market board price checks
− Chat filtering
− Chat bridge to Discord
− Discord notifications for duties, retainer sales, etc.

Install XIVLauncher

Download the latest “Setup.exe” from the releases page and run it. XIVLauncher will start and will be installed to your start menu. To uninstall, you can use the Windows Programs & Apps menu or right click XIVLauncher in your start menu.
⚠ Attention! If you receive errors during the installation or if the launcher doesn’t work correctly, make sure to check your antivirus first and disable it for XIVLauncher. Many commercial antivirus programs detect XIVLauncher as a false positive. You can check for yourself on VirusTotal. If you need any help with this, please check our FAQ or join our Discord channel.

The Penumbra mod installer

Penumbra requires the game to be run in XIVLauncher . It is recommended that you have not modified your client with Textools. If you need Textools for mod creation then point Textools to a dummy copy of your FFXIV client.

Penumbra is a runtime mod loader for FINAL FANTASY XIV, with a bunch of other useful features baked in:

− No need to back up your install – mods don’t touch game files
− Disable and enable mods without restarting the game
− Resolve conflicts between mods by changing mod order
− Apply mods to separate groups, like NPCS, Minions or your own character.
− Mods can be applied in real time in-game after a simple “redraw”.

Install Penumbra

Add Penumbra as a custom plugin to Dalamud (XIVLauncher Plugins)

− Login to the game, access Dalamud by pressing escape
− Navigate to Settings > Experimental

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/xivdev/Penumbra/master/repo.json

− Add some folders to organize your mods, example “body”, “hands”, “hair”

− Some world mods can be triggered by doing teleporting to another zone
− UI Mods can be triggered by visiting the aesthetician and then canceling the sequence.
− You can also go back to “Settings” turn off “Enable Mods” then turning it back on.
